Banana Republic is teaming up with Milly for a capsule collection perfect for the upcoming summer season. The collection embraces the aspects that both designers are known for, Banana’s effortless, tailored chic separates and Milly’s glamorous prints. The two come together to make such perfect summer pieces that will fit into anyone’s closet.
The inspiration behind the collection is the Hampton’s in the summer so there is definitely a preppy vibe in the clothes that is played down with some of the more adventurous prints and vibrant colors. The key to dressing in the summer according to Milly’s head designer, Michelle Smith, is to find a perfect balance between sexy and casual while still feeling confident. The pieces for women in this collection are exactly that, especially the color blocked and floral maxi dresses and the adventurous prints on both blouses and shorts. Summer is the time to experiment with style, color and proportions so why not try pairing the neon printed medallion top and the elephant printed shorts to try the mixed print trend? The elephant print is one of the favorites of both Michelle Smith and Banana Republic’s head designer Simon Kneen because it channels Banana’s history as a safari, outdoor company.
This was the first time Michelle Smith ever designed menswear and when working with Banana Republic there was no doubt it would be a success. The micropinted shorts are a spin on the preppy classic while the floral print polo shirt is a definite improvement to the men’s summer staple Hawaiian shirt.
We can learn a lot from this pairing when working on our own collections. Michelle stepped out of her comfort zone to work on menswear, while Banana took a risk on her ability to execute. This Hamptons inspired collaboration is a major success for both the designers and the everyday shopper looking for a summer update. The collection doesn’t hit stores until May30th but it’ll definitely be popular so make sure to check it out before everything is picked over.
