Sewing binding on activewear

A “simple” project is rarely as simple as it seems for a sewing factory to produce profitably- for the shop or the client.  Most manufacturers have a specialty, something they do REALLY WELL.  For us, that’s leggings.   Over the years we’ve been able to expand this offering to other products with similar materials and construction.  How do we decide what’s right for our factory?  We start with the following questions: What’s the MATERIAL? We primarily work with knit fabrics, prefer synthetics, and avoid lightweight and loose knit materials.  – Our team members are wizards at sewing knits thanks to years of practice focused on continuousRead More →

Runway Tie Dye Dress

Tie Dye quickly became a Covid pastime and brands wasted no time jumping on the trend. It was likely an easy solution to the piles of pre-made garments and greige goods not expected to sell during a pandemic. But sell they did and Tie Dye Prints are everywhere!! No- we don’t expect this to be a fleeting trend. Though for trends like tie dye to put down roots, it needs a few good spinoffs. Today we’d like to explore beyond tie dye and share some prints from our collection to help pull together yours. Think past your home-made rendition and learn how to amplify thisRead More →

CIRCULAR KNITTING MACHINE

Our simplest explanation, leggings are knit (and stretchy) – dress shirts are woven (and not).  Primarily we sew with knit fabrics, so it’s one of the first questions we’ll ask new clients with a non-legging project.  The fabric is a key factor in any sewn product, so let’s see if you can guess knit or woven. Maybe this will help with your education.  Woven fabrics are made on a loom with a warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) thread.  How the threads are intertwined, or woven, depends on the type of fabric.  Some you’ll easily be able to find in your closet. Knit fabrics are interlacedRead More →

Making the Cut

Have you started watching Making the Cut? While the format is nothing new, we were stoked about the addition of seamstresses. The ability of a designer to translate their ideas to a seamstress is an important skill set. Did you notice this is the only communication they have? The entire garment failed or succeeded based on the information included in the designers tech packs. While speaking with the contestants, the judges highlighted the importance of being able to sell your brand. They also celebrated a quick save when a garment had to be scraped. We’d like to highlight the fact that you could play aRead More →

flamingo print design

If you follow us on Instagram, you already know how this story goes. A girl goes to the nail salon for a fresh mani pedi, gets some simple nail art, and a few hours later is inspired to create a print design. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JLD-Studios (@jld_studios) on Feb 18, 2020 at 9:27am PST We love this story as it shows you never know how or where inspiration will strike. Of course this print design didn’t start with the results you see. Some creative brain spiraling through Florida, diner seats, and neon signs. Flash on flamingos and pop! ARead More →

Textile and print design can take on many forms. One of the most common is repeating patterns. This can also be called a seamless design. In it’s simplest form, it’s a motif that can be repeated vertically and horizontally, forever, without a break in the design. Repeating patterns can be seen in everything from leggings to wallpaper. The key factor to consider when designing into this format is how your design will look once repeated out. If the fabric will be cut into multiple small pieces, the seam may not be an issue. But in larger formats, hiding the seam creates a much more fluidRead More →

polyester fabric printing

Last month at the LA Textile Show we highlighted our sublimation printing services. One of our biggest takeaways, other than amazing new contacts, was that polyester fabric still has a bad rap. We aim to change that with more education on today’s polyester. This is not the fiber your parents, or grandparents wore. Polyester has come a long way in the last 50 odd years. Wicking in Polyester I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but for those needing a refresher. Wicking, in fabrics, is the act of moisture being pulled through the fiber of your leggings to the surface of the fabric where it canRead More →

color matching

We love working with clients remotely, it’s the digital age after all. One area that can get a bit tricky is color matching. Why? (and) What does that mean? Basically, getting the color you’re envisioning to print out, or match, your example image, swatch, or idea. One way to do this is with Pantone Color Systems. The only downfall is you really need to have the physical books. Here’s why: We visited their website and utilized the handy “Find a Pantone” Tool. This snapshot is what we could see on our screen versus the physical Living Coral page from our Pantone book. See the difference?Read More →
